TIPS BEFORE THE
HAJJ
1.
A pilgrim will leave his/her home with a very high spiritual feeling. This
optimism will be dampened by the health problems you'll have to cope with in the
two Holy Cities. Don't push yourself. Your body needs lots of rest to cope with
these problems. Do what you can and move on. Concentrate on your worship.
2.Most pilgrims will suffer from one or
more of the following: sore throat, coughing, frequent sneezing, runny nose and
fever. Take enough supplies of ”over the counter” medications from the
USA because you are not familiar with the medications used in Saudi Arabia.
3.
Take multivitamins daily as you may not be eating a balanced diet during
the journey.
4. If you have asthma, consult your doctor on the extra precautions you
need to take as it is very dusty in many of the places you'll be visiting.
5.
Avoid applying perfumes with strong smell. Have some consideration for
those with medical conditions like asthma and migraine. Strong smells are
associated with migraine and asthma attacks. When you consider the well-being
of others in your actions, Allah (SWT) will be pleased and insha
Allah, reward you. Point to Note: Perfumes are prohibited in the state of ihram.
6. The
Hajj pilgrimage involves a lot of walking. If you don't go for
daily walks, start doing it at least one month before your trip. This will
reduce the likelihood of getting muscle pulls and cramps. In and around Makkah, it is packed with small hills, so you will be doing
a lot more walking than your normal schedule. Do not stop this habit of walking
when you return home, it will help to be physically fit.
7.
You are always very close to another pilgrim when you are in Makkah during the peak period of the pilgrimage. Cover your
nose and mouth with a mask when you leave your hotel to reduce the
likelihood of infection.
8. If
you wear glasses, take an extra pair, preferably one with a plastic
frame. The likelihood of your glasses falling down and being stepped on by
sudden movements of the crowd are high.
9.
Flatulence (passing of wind) is an important cause of the loss of wudu. In the crowd packed Holy Mosques, this can be
a big problem. Avoid or reduce the intake of food that contribute
to this problem. If this is a serious problem for you, consult your doctor.
Both herbal and other medications [antacid antiflatulent]
are now available to reduce the occurrence of flatulence.
12.
Have a dental check-up at least 2 months before your departure so that there
is ample time for treatment and follow-ups. It is not nice to have a severe
toothache while performing The Hajj!
